The state of Mayland operates 26 correctional facilities It operates the oldest known correctional facility in the nation, the Maryland Penitentiary, opened in 1811; it was renamed the Metropolitan Transition Center in February 1998. Their newest facility is the Western Correctional Institution which opened in July 1996. The Division of Correction's intake reflects the 16th highest rate of commitments in the nation. The Division of Correction has the 25th average cost per inmate per day in the nation. Cost per inmate per day means the money it costs to house an inmate for one day.
